Voter Registration. September 26th is National Voter Registration Day and the League of Women Voters will be at the Herrick Library in Holland to help citizens register or update their registrations. Many Americans don't know that if you recently moved, changed your name, or haven't voted in recent elections, you need to update your voter registration. Those who recently turned 18 need to register to vote. Our water supplies, roads, and parks are determined at the local level, yet only 1-in-t eligible voters turn our for local elections (including races for mayor, city council, and local ballot initiatives.) These offices and issues have an impact on our daily lives. Register to vote.

Stand UP: Protect the Vote. Mark your calendars, you won't want to miss this program. The League of Women Voters will host a public forum featuring a presentation by our state president, Judy Karandjeff, who marched in Selma, and our state advocacy vice president, Joan Hunault. They will review the history of our voting rights, including women's right to vote, the voting bill of 1965, and voter suppression efforts that have continued to emerge including the 2013 Supreme Court decision, and the newly formed "Election Integrity Commission." We will be given actionable suggestions to protect the vote.

Four lucky participants will leave the forum with a gift: a boxed set of the three volume graphic novel March by Congressman John Lewis; The King Years by Taylor Branch; The Fight to Vote by Michael Waldman; or Give Us the Ballot by Ari Berman.

We are hosting this event along with 16 other states participating in this project. The League of Women Voters has worked to register voters for 98 years, since women gained the right to vote with passage of the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1919.

We will guide you through the 8R's and help you be better recyclers and environmental stewards. This program is part of the Holland area's America Recycles activities.
