Rally & Voter Registration Event. The League of Women Voters of the Holland Area is partnering with the Rally for Commonality and will be registering voters at this event. The Rally is the one year anniversary of the 2017 Women's March.

RALLY FOR COMMONALITY Women's March Anniversary - We're Better Together. (Rally is from Noon to 1:30 followed by speakers at the Armory)

We have more in common than what separates us here on the Lakeshore

We invite everyone who supports equal rights for and treatment of:

Immigrants, refugees, people with disabilities, women, people of color, ethnicity, gender expressions, sexual orientations, and religions.

We support public education for all, scientific research and protecting our planet's resources.

This rally is a partnership with Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance, Lighthouse Immigrant Advocates, Center For Women In Transition and Out On The Lakeshore.

Women's March: Power to the Polls (local march). On the anniversary of the 2017 Women's March in Washington DC, LWV members and friends will unite to celebrate strides we've made so far and to make plans to build our future.

If you are unable to travel to the the state or national marches, please join the local march in Douglas. Meet at the corner of Central and Main Streets.

Women's March Michigan: Power to the Polls (Lansing). On the one-year anniversary of the Women's March in Washington DC, Michiganders will unite to celebrate the strides we've made so far and to make plans to build our future. The LWV of Michigan is joining this event and all members and friends are encouraged to attend.

Interested in carpooling? Meet up at 10am at the MDOT Carpool Lot, 8531 Homestead Drive, Zeeland, MI 49464. This is off I-196 exit 55, on BR-196 by the Citgo/7-Eleven station.

Quality of Life: Community Policing for Peaceful Living. A safe and friendly community is essential to our sense of well-being and quality of life. How does the Holland Police Department's community policing approach help local residents of all walks of life observe life satisfaction? We'll learn about the research, training and staffing behind local law enforcement's Community Policing work. Our discussion will include fair and equitable interactions and address the needs of our community. Local data from HPD will be provided.

TBA Voter Registration Training & Forum Training. Thank you to all who indicated an interest in being trained to register voters. We will be partnering with the Ottawa County Clerk Office to offer training during the month of March, 2018. Watch for details and specific dates in the spring.

Also planned for spring are training dates for moderators and timers of forums.

Community Knowledge: Planting and Saving Seeds. Ben Cohen, sustainable homesteader and proprietor of Small House Farm, is an heirloom seed activist and educator. He is passionate about growing food and will discuss why planting, saving, and sharing seeds is essential to the cultivation of sustainable neighborhoods, healthy communities and the preservation of history. Basic and intermediate seed saving techniques will be explained. Seeds will be given away to attendees (while supplies last). This event coincides with the launch of HDL's seed saving library.

Environmental Awareness/Action: Fly Fishing. For over 100 years fly fishermen have been leaders in the watershed conservation movement. Local authos Jon Osborn, and local Illustrator Joe Van Faasen, of the book "Classic Michigan Flies: 16 Legendary Patterns", will be speaking about Michigan's fly fishing heritage. This is a book for people who love fly fishing, who are interested in history, and have an appreciation for art. Jon and Joe will also share which local waters are great for fly fishing. There will be a reading from the forthcoming book, "Fly Fisher's Guide to Michigan." Book sales and signing to follow.

Transportation: Green Commute Expo. The Macatawa Area Coordinating Council (MACC) will be celebrating Green Commute Week this year from May 13th to the 19th, and as part of the week's activities we will be hosting a Green Commute Expo highlighting alternative forms of transportation. The expo will have a short presentation about the different green commute options in the Holland/Zeeland area and the role transportation plays in the 40-Year Community Energy Plan. This will be followed by fun hands-on activities for the whole family! Bring your bike as there will be bike tune-up demos and safety checks provided by the Velo City Cycles team. Note: This is a Friday evening event.
