LWVHollandArea_rgb.png
In January 2025 the League of Women Voters Holland Area members met to review the LWV Michigan Positions and to set priorities for local advocacy based on the LWVUS and LWVMI Positions. LWVMI positions are posted on the LWVMI website; LWVUS positions are published in Impact on Issues

As a grassroots organization, the League of Women Voters adopts positions after extensive study and review by members.  Any advocacy actions (education or action) must be grounded in an adopted position. Three priority issues for local education and advocacy identified by the Holland League members:
Task forces focused on each of the three issues were formed in spring 2025.  A description of the task forces is below. LWVHA members are welcome to join any of the task forces. A blog for each task force is available for members to learn more about actions and updates.

Civic Education Task Force

Goal of Civic Education Task Force: To enhance civic education for all voters, particularly young voters, empowering them with the confidence and motivation to make their voices heard through voting.

Priority areas for activities are:

·      Working with area high schools, using the Energizing Young Voters curriculum, designed by the New Jersey LWV.

·      Local government

·      Why voting matters

·      Civil discourse

The LWV positions, studied and adopted, that support the work of this task force include the following:

Citizen's Right to Vote: The League of Women Voters of the United States believes that voting is a fundamental citizen right that must be guaranteed. (Impact on Issues 2024-2026, p. 27)

Citizen’s Right to Know/Citizen Participation: The League of Women Voters of the United States believes that democratic government depends upon informed and active participation at all levels of government. The League further believes that governmental bodies must protect the citizen’s right to know by giving adequate notice of proposed actions, holding open meetings, and making public records accessible.  (Impact on Issues 2024-2026, p. 59)

Immigration Task Force

The Immigration Task Force aims to collaborate with local organizations to deepen our understanding at this very precarious time for many families in our community.  The initial focus for this task force is on education.

The LWV positions, studied and adopted, that support the work of this task force include the following:

The League of Women Voters believes that immigration policies should promote reunification of immediate families; meet the economic, business, and employment needs of the United States; and be responsive to those facing political persecution or humanitarian crises. Provision should also be made for qualified persons to enter the United States on student visas. All persons should receive fair treatment under the law.

  • The League supports federal immigration law that provides an efficient, expeditious system (with minimal or no backlogs) for legal entry of immigrants into the United States.
  • To complement these goals, the League supports federal policies to improve economies, education, job opportunities, and living conditions in nations with large emigrating populations.
  • In transition to a reformed system, the League supports provisions for individuals already living in the country without legal permission to earn legal status.
  • The League supports federal payments to impacted communities to address the financial costs borne by states and local governments with large immigrant populations.

Water Resources/Climate Task Force

The work of this task force is focused on monitoring the quality of our community water resources and the health of our local ecosystems through education and collaboration with other organizations working on these issues. The League supports climate goals consistent with the best available climate science to ensure a stable climate for future generations.

The LWV positions, studied and adopted, that support the work of this task force include the following:

Natural Resources

The League of Women Voters of the United States believes that natural resources should be managed as interrelated parts of life-supporting ecosystems. Resources should be conserved and protected to assure their future availability. Pollution of these resources should be controlled in order to preserve the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of ecosystems and to protect public health.
(Impact on Issues, 2024-2026, p.104)

Water Resources

The League supports:

• Water resource programs and policies that reflect the interrelationships of water quality, water quantity, groundwater, and surface water and that address the potential depletion or pollution of water supplies.

• Measures to reduce water pollution from direct point-source discharges and from indirect nonpoint sources.

• Policies to achieve water quality are essential for maintaining species populations and diversity, including measures to protect lakes, estuaries, wetlands, and in-stream flows.

• Stringent controls to protect the quality of current and potential drinking-water supplies, including protection of watersheds for surface supplies and of recharge areas for groundwater.

(Impact on Issues, 2024-2026, p.112)

League of Women Voters of Michigan Position on Great Lakes Ecosystem

The League of Women Voters of Michigan supports preserving and enhancing the environmental integrity and quality of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Ecosystem. We support the attainment and maintenance of high water quality standards throughout the Great Lakes Basin, with emphasis on water pollution prevention. Water conservation should be a high priority of all governments in the Basin.

Climate Change

The League believes that climate change is a serious threat facing our nation and our planet.

The League believes that an interrelated approach to combating climate change — including through energy conservation, air pollution controls, building resilience, and promotion of renewable resources — is necessary to protect public health and defend the overall integrity of the global ecosystem. The League supports climate goals and policies that are consistent with the best-available climate science and that will ensure a stable climate system for future generations. Individuals, communities, and governments must continue to address this issue, while considering the ramifications of their decision at all levels — local, state, regional, national, and global.
