HomeVoter Registration

You may be wondering...

Am I registered to vote?

You can discover if you are already registered by visiting the Michigan Voter Information Center (part of the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office). You can search by your name or drivers’ license to see if you are already registered to vote in Michigan. If you are registered, you will see where you are registered to vote with contact information for your local clerk.  VOTE411will also direct you to this resource to verify your voter registration status.

How do I register to vote?

You can register to vote online, by mail or by visiting your local clerk's office. You will find step-by-step instructions for registering online or find an application to register by mail at the Michigan Voter Information Center or at VOTE411 There are deadlines for registering online or by mail. You can also register in person at your local clerk's office. Check with your local clerk's office for opening hours and be sure to take documents required to verify your name and address. You will be able to register on election day at your local clerk's office, too.

Information about recent changes in voter registration and absentee balloting rules can be found in the Voting Rights in Michigan section. The League of Women Voters of the Holland Area sponsors voter registration events throughout the year. Check the "Events" section of our website for dates and locations.

If I’m not 18, can I still register to vote?

If you are at least 17 1/2 years old, are otherwise eligible to be a registered voter, and will be 18 by the day of the next election, you are able to register to vote. To register, you may need to visit your local clerk’s office or branch office (prior to the 14-day window).

Can I vote by mail (absentee ballot)?

Yes! All voters in Michigan have the right to vote by absentee ballot now. It is a convenient and safe way to vote that fits any schedule. Forms to request an absentee ballot and detailed information can be found on the MIchigan Secretary of State's office Your request must be received by 5pm on the Friday before the election.

If I am a student, should I register using my school address or my home address?

This is entirely up to you! You can register either at your home address or your school address.

Factors to consider when selecting which address to register at include what is most convenient for you and if you would like to vote by mail or in person. To register at an address, you must be a Michigan resident (at the time you register) and a resident of your city or township for at least 30 days (when you vote).

If you do decide to register at an address that is different than what is listed on your driver’s license, be aware that any change to your voter registration address will automatically update the state’s records for your driver’s license address as well. You will receive a sticker in the mail to update the address on your license.
