Who are we? What do we do?

The League of Women Voters of Holland Area is a non-partisan organization working to empower voters and defend democracy. We provide information about the voting process, hold candidate forums, sponsor voter registration drives, publish voter guides and maintain the VOTE411 website. These are are just a few examples of our league’s activities.

We do not support or oppose any candidates. We do study issues and take positions on those issues. LWV current initiative is the League’s Unite and Rise 8.5 initiative which describes the actions we must take:

• Empowering voters online (VOTE411)

• Empowering voters on the ground

• Fighting anti-voter laws, federally and statewide

• Showing up in partnership

• Speaking out against anti-democratic action

We have just over 100 members – both men and women. League members have a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. They support the work of the league by volunteering for events, attending meetings, helping with activities, and studying issues.

Membership is open to anyone who is at least 18 years old. Interested in learning more or joining us for a meeting? Have a question? Contact us!

The LWVUS Unite & Rise initiative intends to mobilize 8.5 million voters for the 2026 primary and general elections, to be held August 4 and November 3. So what can each of us do?

One way all of us can encourage people to vote is to be sure they have the information they need. You can tell them about VOTE411.org. The information for Michigan’s August primary election has been loaded by the VOTE411 team. There you can check your registration status, locate your polling location and the times for early voting, AND learn what will be on your ballot. Share this

KNOW WHAT YOU SIGN!

Petition drives are gearing up in Michigan. Many circulators will be in our communities in the next year – especially during warm-weather months – attempting to get a minimum of 500,000 valid signatures so that the proposal can be part of the November, 2026 ballot. The language stating what the ballot proposal would do is limited to 100 words and the circulator has no obligation to provide detailed information. The League is providing this brief explanation of the potential ballot proposals that have been approved by the Michigan Board of Canvassers (frequently updated).

All Hands on Deck!

Many thanks to the 18 LWVHA members who have completed the “All Hands on Deck” survey! However, that means that MANY of our 119 members have not yet taken a few minutes to respond. Please take five minutes to let us know how you can help (a little or a lot) with our important mission to Empower Voters this fall. Join a Task Force Today

Please volunteer to join an Advocacy committee to examine the following local issues and develop some action plans. While there are many topics to explore, we want to focus our initial efforts on the following areas which align with LWV positions at the state and/or national level.

1. Civic education: We aim to enhance civic education for all voters, particularly young voters, empowering them with the confidence and motivation to make their voices heard through voting.
2. Immigration: We plan to collaborate with local organizations to deepen our understanding at this very precarious time for many families in our community.
3. Water resources and climate action: There are multiple facets to investigate, including the quality of our drinking water and the health of local ecosystems. Since Michigan is the only state without septic regulations, it is important to learn about local regulations. The League supports climate goals consistent with the best available climate science to ensure a stable climate for future generations.
